The Nijenburg estate is located between Alkmaar and Heiloo on an old beach ridge, which was richly covered with forest during the Middle Ages. The nearby coastal plain was reclaimed by the powerful Egmond Abbey. Storms later created Bergermeer and Egmondermeer lakes, which were both drained and reclaimed in the 17th century. Shortly after 1700, the Nijenburg country estate was built. The estate’s forests and the surrounding meadows are now owned by Natuurmonumenten, which wants to preserve it in all its former glory.
- The Heilooërbos Tour (yellow) is a route through the woods of the old Nijenburg estate and is perfect for the whole family. At the edge of the forest, you get a panoramic view over the surrounding meadows and the impressive manor house.
- The Baafjes Route (red) goes along a beautiful grassy quay through the Baafjes polder. Dogs are not allowed.
- The Heilooër Route (purple) is a long circular walk through the green countryside in and around Heiloo. The Zuiderloo district is home to three historic hedgerows that were created centuries ago to protect fields and gardens from wind erosion. Dogs are prohibited.
- The Old Towpath Route (green) lets you explore the old towpaths (jaagpaden) along the Hoevervaart canal. Dogs are prohibited.
